Bar Manager Jobs

Jobs in the restaurant and hospitality industry can be fun, exciting, rewarding and lucrative. Of all the jobs one can obtain within this industry being a bar manager has one of the greatest earning potentials and numerous opportunities for career advancement. Bar managers can work in a variety of different places including, a small local pub, a night club, a restaurant, a hotel and a resort. Being a bar manager does entail a lot of responsibility including, managing staff, performing business operational tasks and engaging with guest.

Managing Staff

When a person is hired to be a bar manager they are responsible for running the entire bar and that includes hiring, firing and managing staff. Bar managers must collect applications and interview bartenders, wait staff and bus people. Additionally, they must schedule staff for their shifts and delegate tasks and responsibilities among the staff on each shift. When staff members are not meeting their required obligations a bar manger must discipline the staff and may be required to fire them if necessary.

Business Operational

Perhaps the most difficult part of being a bar manger involves the business operational task that are involved in the job. People who manage a bar have to order products that are needed to keep the bar running like alcohol, paper products, flatware, food and décor. They also have to keep up with billing and invoicing distributors that they work with and make sure payments are sent out in a timely fashion.

Bar managers also have to take care of payroll for employees and may even have to handle organization of benefits for health care. They also need to make sure everything in the bar is up to code and complies with any township or city laws.

Engaging with Customers

An important part of being a bar manager is being the face of the establishment in which you work. You need to spend adequate time out on the floor greeting guest and participating in operational tasks. Additionally, you need to over see the employees as they work and make sure everything is going smoothly. You may also be required to deal with disgruntled customers from time to time. It is a bar manger’s responsibility to make sure customers leave the bar happy and are likely to return.

There is a lot of things involved with running a bar and the job is certainly not for everyone. Bar management can be very stressful, time consuming and difficult. Not just anyone can be a bar manager. Generally people who get hired on to manage bars have prior experience working in the hospitality industry and many of them have also attended technical school or college. The best way to get a job as a bar manger if you have not had any schooling is to get your foot in the door with another entry level job working in a restaurant or bar. After that you can work your way up to eventually becoming a bar manager.
